Arm & Leg Pain

Our shoulders and hips are the most mobile joints in the body, and pain there is often referred from irritation that begins at the spine.

Most people don’t realize how much we rely on our arms and legs every day. Our shoulder and hip joints are among the most mobile and most-used joints in the body, and that combination of frequency and mobility opens the door to a wide range of injuries and sources of pain.

What causes it

Arm and leg pain can come on suddenly or build gradually:

  • Acute, athletic overuse, car accidents, lifting too much, or prolonged positioning
  • Gradual, subluxations, arthritis, bursitis, tendinitis, frozen shoulder, or new medications
  • Referred pain, pain felt in the limb but originating elsewhere, often from nerve irritation at the spine

Finding the real source

Because the joints are complex and the possible causes are many, accurate diagnosis matters. We use a thorough history, physical examination, and advanced imaging, along with the location of your pain, what aggravates or relieves it, and symptoms like swelling or bruising, to get to the root cause.

Can chiropractic help?

Over many years, our doctors have found that misalignments (subluxations) of the vertebrae in the neck are responsible for the vast majority of arm and leg pain. When those bones lose proper position and motion, they irritate surrounding tissues, including nerves that travel from the spine all the way to your fingertips and toes. Correcting them can relieve pain felt far from the spine itself.

Nervous System Health

When the cause is referred nerve pain, the answer lives in the nervous system. Restoring communication, often through upper cervical care, is the first pillar of the RESTORE Way.

Common Questions

What patients ask about Arm & Leg Pain

Why would neck alignment affect my arm or leg?

Many nerves travel from the spine all the way to the hands and feet. When vertebrae are misaligned, they can irritate those nerves and create pain anywhere along the limb, this is called referred pain.

How do you find the cause?

We use a thorough history, physical exam, and advanced imaging, plus the specifics of your pain, to pinpoint the true source before recommending care.
